30 Seconds for Earth is an emerging interdisciplinary project focused on connection, biodiversity, presence, as well as the haunting possibility of their loss. Continuing with research that began in 2014, the hula hoop forms an integral part of this project as that which represents continual movement and houses a wealth of contradictions and contrasts. The hoop; childlike, playful, mystic, sexy, sacred, fun, unassuming, graceful, meditative – but only if it keeps moving.
Alongside the movement of the hoop is the sound of the cycle. In repetitions, circles, phrases, what would a continuous looping sound for the Earth be? As one small voice in a global choir of mantras, music, poetry and chants, what is the sound of our mourning and our celebration? How do we move together through and with our endless and continuing contradictions?
The material that is collaboratively gathered in the first phase of 30 seconds for Earth will form part of a larger artistic and research endeavour. Possible outcomes include live performance, installation, hooping interventions, online community, and a global movement that crosses borders and dances with the sacred and the profane.
